“If you give a pig a party on some sunny afternoon,
what’s the first thing she will ask you? She will ask you for balloons!”
CEE is proud to present
Dallas Children’s Theater in their original production of IF YOU GIVE A PIG
A PARTY, the irresistible adventures of a darling pig and her loveable
friends.
Celebration reigns supreme in this delightful script of
another of Laura Numeroff’s extremely popular books from the #1 New York
Times best-selling “If You Give” series. DCT fans will remember past
blockbuster productions of “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” and “If You Give a
Mouse a Cookie”, and both the Moose and the Mouse return for the fun in IF
YOU GIVE A PIG A PARTY.
Settings leap from the page to the stage and are true
to Felicia Bond’s wonderful illustrations. With live musical accompaniment
and outrageous physical comedy, audiences are in for a compelling theatrical
experience.
Director Nancy Schaeffer states, “If you fell in love
with the Mouse or the Moose, this show will be a treat for you. It’s very
unique for an author to bring lead characters together in a new story.
DCT’s best-selling ‘If You Give a Mouse a Cookie’ was so popular partly due
to pre-teens and adolescents that grew up with the Mouse and couldn’t wait
to see him on stage. Any story that inspires this kind of love and devotion
is a classic.”
IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PARTY is a carnival of music,
festivity and friendship. When a young Girl decides to throw a party for the
Pig for no special reason, it isn’t long before the raucous entertainment
begins. A motley group of friends are invited: Mouse, Moose, Cat, Dog and
Snake. Before the party starts these curious and energetic chums soon lead
the Girl on a whirlwind of events creating much more work than she
originally anticipated. Will it be the best day ever for this silly bunch
or a disaster in the making? Come see what happens when you mix puppets,
bicycles, bumper cars, pillow fights, ballet and ice cream!
This irresistible story captures the essence of
childhood wonder and generosity. As the party hostess, the Girl assumes a
parental role to the Pig and all her sweet, but very demanding friends.
Children and younger siblings will find similarities in how the Girl must
deal with her rambunctious “children”, but the payoff is worth the effort
when happiness and joy end the day.
Laura Numeroff is the best-selling author of many books
for children including “The Chicken Sisters” illustrated by Sharleen
Collicott and “Laura Numeroff’s 10-Step Guide to Living with Your Monster”
illustrated by Nate Evans. She resides in Los Angeles, California. Felicia
Bond has illustrated numerous books for children including “Big Red Barn” by
Margaret Wise Brown and “Little Porcupine’s Christmas” by Joseph Slate. She
is also author of “The Day It Rained Hearts”, “The Halloween Play” and the
Poinsettia books. Ms. Bond lives in Austin, Texas and Santa Fe, New
Mexico. Numeroff and Bond have collaborated on a best-selling series that
delights adults and children with the “If You Give” books.
Nancy Schaeffer and B. Wolf’s partnership spans over
ten years, and this marks their first collaboration as co-authors. Ms.
Schaeffer is an expert at presenting Laura Numeroff’s works for the stage.
In January 2000 Ms. Schaeffer obtained special rights from Harper Collins to
adapt Numeroff’s bestseller, “If You Give a Moose a Muffin”, and in January
2005 she directed DCT’s blockbuster, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”.
Audiences will remember Ms. Wolf’s music from DCT’s “The Velveteen Rabbit”,
“Jack & the Giant Beanstalk” and “Pecos Bill”. Her award winning musical
adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s “Peter Rabbit” has played in theaters across
the country. As resident playwright and composer with Kathy Burks Theatre
of Puppetry Arts, she has authored more than thirty puppet plays, musicals
and operettas.
Award winning set designer Randel Wright has taken his
inspiration directly from the storybook and focused on the cyclical nature
of the “If You Give” series themes. In addition to scenery, locations are
projected 3-D animations using varying speeds to represent the rhythm of the
piece, and generate a sense of anticipation that comes with turning the
page. This innovative and groundbreaking concept, new to the theatrical
art form and to Dallas, creates illusion, builds greater density and
produces depth of movement with a cinematic feel. Mr. Wright has many
years of design experience having worked in the musical theater touring
market as well as professional LORT theaters across the U.S. Locally he has
designed for nearly every venue in town including Dallas Summer Musicals,
Dallas Theater Center, and Classical Acting Company to name a few. He is an
adjunct professor and lecturer at UNT and SMU Meadows School of the Arts.
Similar to the famous children’s book that inspired
the play, this production is ideal for the youngest of audience members and
is recommended for ages 3 and up. It is an excellent introduction to
theater, as well as lively entertainment for all ages.
Remember, life’s a celebration hearty – if you give a
pig a party!
